A Hundred Miles an Hour in the Wrong Direction

In my travels, I met a woman who, from the outside, seemed to have it all.  She had a successful business that brought in big bucks, friends who were ever present, and a beautiful home filled with priceless possessions.  Every time I saw her, she was always in a hurry to get somewhere.

One day, while I was out and about, I happened to run into her, out of curiosity, I asked “Where ya headed?”  What I meant was, where are you off to at this time?  What she heard was, where are you headed in life?  That one question stopped her in her tracks.  The look on her face was like a deer in the headlights.

After hesitating for what seemed like several minutes, she looked at me with a long face and said, “I don’t know, I don’t know where I’m headed,” then admitted to having a long-standing feeling of emptiness and unfulfillment in her life, her career, and in her relationships that she managed to hide from the rest of the world.

Where are you headed?  Is your life stuck on cruise control?  Often, we are racing so much to get things done, we don’t think to ask if we’re on the right road.  Have you ever slowed down long enough to question if you are headed in the right direction with your career, your relationships, your desires, and your dreams?

If you don’t know what you hope to accomplish in life you may be taking the wrong road and investing your time and energy in activities that don’t satisfy you.

Below are 7 tips and strategies to help you recalibrate your GPS and start moving in the right direction towards greater satisfaction in your life.

1)     Make a pit stop.  Ask yourself what a fulfilling life would look like for you?

2)     Fill your tank with premium gasoline.  Consider what skills and experience you already possess that can help you move closer to your dreams and desires.  Be clear about what you want to do in your life and who you want to become.  Customize your dreams to who you are today.

3)     Map out a plan.  Put action steps in place to measure your results.  Break large goals into smaller, more realistic, achievable ones.

4)     Line up your pit crew.  Share your goals, dreams, and aspirations with people you know will be there for you through the highs and lows.  Hire a life coach who can support you in going after what you want, hold you accountable for the things you want to achieve in life, and who will help you stay on track long-term.

5)     Get back on the road.  Hit the accelerator and get moving in the direction of your goals, dreams, and desires.

6)     Track your mileage.  Keep track of your achievements and celebrate your victories, large and small, on your journey to fulfillment.

7)      Keep your eyes on the road.  Stay focused on your goals.  Maintain your

lifestyle as you would your car to achieve the best possible results.  If you hit a roadblock, you may need to adjust your goals or goal due dates but do not quit!

There is no better time than the present to go after what you want.  Small steps can lead to big rewards.
